Starry Starry Styrofoam Punch Art

What do you do with all those Styrofoam restaurant to-go boxes?  Reuse them!  Children love to punch holes into the soft Styrofoam!  We used Styrofoam plates for this project as I rarely visit restaurants and get to-go boxes.  As we all know Styrofoam isn't especially earth friendly, but I created this project as a chance to reuse this item before it ends up in our landfill!  The children enjoyed punching holes with wooden skewers on their plates.  It was a great auditory popping sound that musically filled our room! They had fun flying their plates in the air as the skewer stuck in the Styrofoam.   After the children made many holes " the Stars"  they painted their plates with blue glitter paint to create their starry night.   Alexandra and Rylan painted their faces very sparkly.  Rylan became the "Joker" with his blue evil smile! Another activity to do is to have the children punch out their names or simplistic designs such as a heart or triangle.  They will practice their eye-hand coordination skills as well! And another use, have the children practice sewing with string and plastic needle on the Styrofoam plate.  They learn the up and down motion and the mechanics of sewing!  Cade and Rylan shined a flashlight through their plates at nighttime and produced starry reflections on our wall.  What a beautiful way to end our day! Did you ever think we could find educational ways for such a product?
