A House for Hermit Crab

We welcomed our new hermit crab friends into our I Spy box this month.  We named our purple shelled friend "Speedy" because he crawls so fast on the floor.  The other crab we named "Hermie" nicknamed after Hermit Crab!  The children have been enjoying observing the strange creatures as they play hide and seek in their shell.  They pet their bumpy claws and feel their smooth shells.  They watch as they crawl on the floor using their legs to push them forward.  We have a story by Eric Carle about a hermit crab who decorates his shell "house" using different things from the ocean.  He eventually outgrows his house as the months go by and gives it to another smaller hermit crab who is looking for a larger shell home.  There is a spongebob painted empty shell in our I Spy box for when one of our hermit crabs needs to move to a larger home.   What fascinating creatures!
