Ice Painting with Salt

Today the children explored a day of science with our ice painting.  We let the children pick out 2 pieces of ice to lay on their papers.  We observed the ice cubes and felt how cold they were to touch.  We talked about how they would melt and if they saw their frozen ice cube melting turning back into water.  After adding some salt and paint, the children were able to move their ice cubes with a spoon mixing the ice, salt, and paint around.  Quickly the frozen state of the ice cubes began to melt and the children observed the watery substance on their papers.  They had fun moving and driving the ice cubes around their papers creating beautiful works of art.  Some of the children made handprints with their watercolors turning their hands shades of blue and green.  After the pictures were dried, the salt left a sparkle on their papers.  What a fun way to explore the art of science!
