The children explored the properties of melting ice today with our ice cube painting. The children were given 2 ice cubes with paint to play with, and we talked about how cold they were to touch. We talked about how ice melts and what kinds of things that can make ice melt. Then we let the children sprinkle salt onto their ice and papers and watched the magic happen, as their ice cubes began to melt rapidly. They swirled their ice cubes into the paint mixing the blue and red paint to make purple. They explored making handprints and slapping their papers making sprinkles of paint fly everywhere! The fun was to watch the ice cubes disappear and soon rivers of water spread across our table. Then the children enjoyed tearing their papers into pieces and molding them into balls, pyramids, and such. Lyla was so engrossed in imaginary play with her paper pieces she was the last one at the table!
