Crayon Melt Griddle Art

The older children explored today with the properties of melting wax.  They first helped peel the crayon wrappers and were able to draw pictures on their white paper.  Peeling the crayons helped in practicing their fine motor skills as they worked diligently unveiling the crayons from their papers.  We wrapped our pancake griddle with aluminum foil and let the children throw down their unwrapped crayons.  We all watched as the crayons began to melt and colors started blending into one another.  We let the children explore with a spoon swirling the different colors around and creating cool Tye-dye art.  They watched in amazement as the hard crayons would melt into liquid before their eyes!  Next we placed their white papers over the melting crayons and let the children pat them down with a spoon.  We peeled off their papers leaving beautiful works of art that dried quickly.  The children were able to feel their smooth works of art that had hardened.  What a great science and sensory exploration day!
