Candy Heart Collage

The candy heart glue collage turned out to be a sticky sweet mess!  It was hard to discourage the children in eating and licking as many hearts as the could get in their mouths.  It was fun anyway to squeeze a huge puddle on the paper and soak the sweet candies.  The dye from the candies left a soft watercolor effect in the puddles of glue which was quite neat.  The children were curious as to what the letters on the little hearts said, so I read everyones heartwarming  hearts to them!  Overall this project was a flop as it was too tempting to eat the sweet goodies and my discouragement to do so after they had eaten many ,only made their creativity disappear.  Even Cade lost his interest glueing on only 3 lonely hearts.  He had more fun gathering a pile of candy hearts and bringing them to the playroom for imaginary play during  quiet time.  He eventually brought all the hearts back into the kitchen where he sorted out the colors and he too was curious as to what the letters said.  He discovered looking at his paper that the lonely 3 hearts had started melting and as he moved them on the paper to his surprise he made a picture of a “fire”!  At snack time Cade showed off his new found skills of rolling the dissolving heart on his tongue.  Showing his friends made everyone laugh.  Having only two hearts left in his pockets  he generously shared with Alexandra. I thought it was a very nice gesture on his part.  On the positive side of this project we learned some literacy skills, creativity, generosity, and new tricks with our tongues!
