Change of Seasons Heart Prints

Our vinegar red tissue paper heart painting was a delicate art activity.  The children painted vinegar onto the cut-out red tissue paper hearts adhering them to their white paper.  The children picked various sizes of hearts to paint, the biggest hearts being the favorite.  It was a delicate process to paint the delicate tissue paper onto their papers.  The children were very focused while painting, realizing the tissue paper was very fragile.  Some hearts got torn or scrunched in the painting process, but overall the children handled the hearts with a gentle touch.  The sensory aspect of the vinegar smelling was powerful.  We let our paintings dry in hopes of revealing red stained heart prints on the white paper.  Unfortunately our paper didn’t bleed it’s red colors like I thought it would but left many surprises for us to see.  As the hours passed the vinegar reacted with our red and gold tissue paper.  The gold turned brown like an dried old maple leaf.  I was surprised that the shiny metallic color disappeared.  Another surprise was that peeling off the red hearts did reveal some bleeding color onto our papers, but to our amazement it was the color blue! Who would have thunk! Sometimes those moments of scientific discovery are really cool!
