The Mechanics of Building a Water Slide

Summer welcomes water play to our play yard.  The children helped me engineer water slides for their boats to float down.  We have been getting a lot of use out of our gutters for outside and  indoor play.  I like how many activities can revolve around our gutters.  The children had fun helping me move the gutters in the right position to make the water flow.  We tried various toys to help stabilize our water slide.  The children were very helpful suggesting various toys for support.  We finally got the right combination of car, ladder, and sandbox to make our water slide.  We stuck a water hose in one end of our gutter and let the ride began!  They were immediately joyed to learn that we had made a waterfall at the other end.  We used little tin pretend “boats” for our play.  We use these petit four molds for a lot of our activities as the children love the tin shapes an sounds of the metal.  They floated peacefully down our chute to take the plunge over the waterfall into the sandbox.  The children learned that the boats would sink and not float if they were filled with too much water, dirt, wood chips, etc.  Madden and Cade took turns racing their boats down the chute.  They would cheer on their boats making a game out of this play.  Spencer loved hanging out at the waterfall which was now making a muddy lake in our sandbox.  Sometimes our gutters would fall apart and we would have to fix the whole contraption again.  It was a great day of problem-solving, engineering, science, sensory, and imaginary play!
